Rocky Top to the Queen City

Woke up to a quarter-full lot of Sunday worshippers at the Worship Center on the hill. Hit the road immediately, with the intent of cruising a few exits north and getting a cup of coffee. Played one-more-exit roulette until hitting a wall of stopped traffic on a two-lane stretch of I-75 outside Jellico. Finished the…

Wenched out and back on the road

Quick dispensation with the prostration that every blog owner must inevitably perform: errr uhhh sorry I haven’t updated in a while guys. I meant to write/post more while I was traveling in Asia, then I didn’t. Then I felt bad about not writing more, so I stopped logging into this site. Then five months passed.…

A sample of shirts I’ve found in Thailand so far

Impossibly-long story short: Thailand rocks. Incredible, incredible place. Have not slept more than 4-5 hours on the trip, and found very few spare moments to get some writing done. Arrived in Chiang Mai last night. It’s supposed to be cloudy and overcast while we’re here — good weather to get some writing in.

November Bus Update

The bus is fine. Better than fine, even. Landing gear got fixed. My buddy David (supremely mechanically gifted) had the piece disassembled, torches lit, and was bashing that thing back into shape in no time.

Postscript: Always Check Your Landing Gear

Woke up on the first day with the bus parked next to the house. It hulks next to the place. She big. Wanted to warm the engine in the morning, and straighten out my crooked park job from the night before. I put the cactus back in its place, cranked the engine, and patiently waited…

Day Eleven (The Final Day)

Last night’s hunch was correct — I had a great night’s sleep outside of the Love’s. Slept so good I missed McDonald’s breakfast. Open my front door a little before 11:00, step out into my yard, and bop on over 30 feet for my first coffee of the day. The goal is home by sundown. Nothing…

Day Ten

Woke up comfortably at Cleave and Stefanie’s in the late morning, and the three of us piled in the Prius for breakfast at their favorite spot down the road. It was the first time I’d been in a normal-sized vehicle in over a week and boy did it feel different. Had an enormously restorative breakfast…

Day Nine

A sluggish and unremarkable stretch from the Lazy Days Campground on to Nashville. A day of driving where the mile markers seemed to be gaslighting me into thinking that my destination was always going to be hours away, no matter how far I drove. Lost some daylight when I had to stop for a nap…

Day Eight

Great night’s sleep in the lot across the street from the Phoenix. Hayden said that one of the chief complaints of Kansas City is that they tore down a ton of historic buildings in exchange for massive surface parking lots. Bad for the civic structure of KC, good for a skoolie passing through town. Took…

Day Seven

Shorter day of driving. 200 miles from Lincoln, NE to Kansas City, MO. Started my Nebraska morning with a Runza, then chewed through the rest of the state. Had a trucker at a rest stop buy my coffee because he liked the bus so much. Another endorsement from a key constituency. I’ve been using this…
